The first meeting of the Cabernet Neighborhood Watch Committee was held on November 8, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. in the Raleys meeting room. Altogether, there were 15 people in attendance from our community in Cabernet Highlands.
Officer Andelin from Reno Police Department was on hand to offer assistance and advice on how best to proceed with forming and maintaining a neighborhood watch committee. He spoke with the attendees, querying their concerns. Many of the issues centered around car burglary and speeders.
Also present was Reno City Councilperson Bonnie Weber. Ms. Weber Hosted a meeting at Alice Smith School several weeks ago to promote Neighborhood Watch groups throughout Ward 4. She is committed to community outreach programs and has been instrumental in several improvements in the North Valleys.
Overall, the crime rate in our neighborhood has been typically very low. However, as the North Valleys continue to grow, the goal of the Neighborhood Watch group is to ensure the security of all our neighbors. Neighborhood Watch programs through, “Neighbors helping Neighbors” ensures the peaceful enjoyment of our homes and families.
The outcome of the first meeting was to establish a series of ongoing meetings to assist with teaching our neighbors better ways to ensure safety for their families and property; to encourage greater participation from more people; to provide communication resources through web page, email, and phone trees that inform people in our community; and to request from local agencies solutions to reduce traffic problems and crime going far into the future.
Officer Andelin spoke on the importance of reporting issues to our community leaders through local agencies.

Wildfire Planning
Just before 6:00pm on May 29, a fire started in the brush behind the Instant Oil Change shop on Buck Drive. The Washoe Zephyr was active but not as strong as we have seen in recent days. The fire grew fast.
Fortunately, the fire was controlled quickly by Truckee Meadows Fire department.
This could have been very bad. In just a small 30 minute window, our community went from not thinking about fire to being in direct line of the blaze. The first house on Buck Dr. was within feet of the fire. The second house was less than 100 yards in the path of the fire.
So here is a real life problem we can use for planning purposes. The fire is minutes away from your house. Do you know what to do first that will save your family? What could you do in advance to prepare for this situation?
The action you take to prepare for wildfire evacuation is the most important step. Check out the following link from Washoe County Emergency Planning: https://www.washoecounty.gov/.../PDFs/Washoe_Singles.pdf

The local and national news has pickup on a new term that we in Neighborhood Watch have been using for a couple of years- Hardening. We are using the term differently

Hardening against Intrusion
We have all been watching the Palisades, Eaton, etc… fires in the California with dread and horror. Some in our community lived through N. California fires just a few years ago. I am sure this is causing these individuals to re-live the terror of wild fires.
The local and national news has pickup on a new term that we in Neighborhood Watch have been using for a couple of years- Hardening. We are using the term differently than the news agencies. Below I give a quick definition of the use of the word Hardening .
Home hardening is the process of making a home resistant to wildfires by using non-combustible materials, reducing debris around the property, and preventing embers from entering the home. This can significantly increase the chances of a home surviving a wildfire.
Target hardening, also referred to simply as hardening when made clear by the context, is a term used by police officers, those working in security, and the military referring to the strengthening of the security of a building or installation in order to protect it in the event of attack or reduce the risk of theft. It is believed that a "strong, visible defense will deter or delay an attack".
The information in the links provided give broad information about Hardening under two circumstances of differing natural and human-caused disasters. Hardening is a process that everyone undertakes to improve safety in their situation
Cabernet Neighborhood Watch next meeting is February 12, 2025. The meting will be held at 7115 Souverain Ln. This is my private home. If you have the opportunity, please join us for additional discussion on Hardening.
